Sew In Love: Fall Tapestry Takeover (Jacket)

So without further ado, here is the tapestry jacket I'd been working on. This particular project has been a year in the making. Sometimes I make patterns from scratch, but this time I decided to find a pattern close enough for me to manipulate to my liking. For me, I was specifically on the hunt for a pattern that complimented an over sized hood. It's not that I'm a lazy sewer, but practical. It's one thing to make a pattern from scratch, it's another to have to also create facings, linings, and a hood. I knew when I saw this pattern, I immediately saw this jacket.

So here's the pattern I used:

McCall's Pattern 6800 - Here I used style "C", but I went ahead and incorporated the detachable hood from style "D".

I wasn't sure that I wanted to do one of the longer styles, but I didn't want it to be too long. This was the first time I'd ever worked with tapestry fabric, and it was a challenge to deal with such a heavyweight fabric. This fabric is normally used in home decor and furniture so it's very thick, although incredibly warm. I couldn't use the normal thread and ended up using an upholstery weight thread. Since the tapestry fabric is very busy, I split it up with some vegan pleather (faux leather). The lining is standard black lining, nothing special there. I wanted a fairly straight-cut pattern because I wanted to draw attention to the hood. And because of the fabric thickness, I ended up making a mock closure using buttons on the outside and large snaps to secure the front.

This was also the first time I had the opportunity to work with a friend, and fellow photographer, Dawn Ronco. All of these amazing pictures are her doing. Thank you Dawn, I look forward to more photo sessions with you!

(I also really love this one. Any excuse to climb up in a tree is good enough for me!)

Food Fun: Honeycrisp Apple Tarts

Wow two posts this week! I'm on a roll!

Recently I went to Fresh Market, (a grocery store). to do some grocery shopping and stumbled across this recipe for an apple tart. I am an apple girl all the way and every year around mid to end September the Honeycrisp apple is in season. If you have seen my Instagram, you've seen the softball size apple. I love them and if I'm not mistaken the normal size ones are used in making candy apples - that's what it tastes like anyway.

So they had this recipe that caught my eye because it was simple with maximum flavor. The end result turned out so delicious I had to share pictures. The only differences for my version were I accidentally cut the puff pastry into 9 pieces instead of 6 and I used a Sweet Tango apple along with the Honeycrisp. Instead of drizzling caramel sauce on it, I melted some of the Pillsbury Caramel Apple Frosting and drizzled it over the tarts - I was not up for making homemade caramel sauce.

This was my first time working with puff pastry. It wasn't so bad. I wouldn't mind cooking with it again. The flakiness is just right and apples cook enough to hold their shape, but melt in your mouth as you sink your teeth into them.

You can find the original recipe here.

Fall Start

I know it's been a while since I've posted last, but I haven't forgotten about you guys! I am so excited fall is here. It's my favorite time of year, especially for fashion. Summer is okay, but I really love all of the style elements of fall. Leggings are at the top of the list along with layers and boots. So this outfit is truly fitting for this time of year where I live. It will be a little while before the temperature changes, but I take any taste of cool air I can get.

Music: PVRIS White Noise Vinyl

So you guys know I am a huge fan of vinyl records. It's not just the classics that sound amazing on them but present day artists are pressing more and more on vinyl - you can't see me, but I am doing my happy dance!

Recently I stumbled across a band called PVRIS (the "V" is actually and upside down "A" - it's pronounced "Paris"). I can't remember how I found them, but all I know is that once I did, "My House" was on repeat. I saw the video before I heard the rest of music, but in the case of this song, I can honestly say it's my current song on replay. The song itself is intoxicating, but the album is just as amazing. So whenever I find an artist I really like, my first question is..."can I get it on vinyl?"

In my hunt for the vinyl, I found that it existed, but it was out of stock - nowhere to be found. I was sad, but persevered. Then as I kept checking every website I could think of, they magically reappeared! There were a few outlets that this is available for purchase, but I ended up buying this from Amazon. Since I have Prime, I use it every chance I get. And of course free two-day shipping is a huge perk. I was surprised because they delivered my package this past Sunday - usually that doesn't happen.

Any who, onto to the album. I have to note I am not a critic, nor am I getting paid to do this. When music is great, it speaks for itself. I encourage you to check them out if you'd like. Lynn's voice (the lead singer) has a pinch of Hayley Williams in it, but it has just a bit more of an edge and I love them both!

What I really like about this, along with other artists, they include a copy of the CD with the LP. This makes it quick and easy to play no matter where you are. (Sidebar - when you purchase any vinyl record from Amazon, they give you a free Mp3 download of the album, so I literally have the album three different ways.

It's just something about that vinyl...

"My House" is my runaway favorite song, but for me, this is an album I've already played through a few times, and White Noise is one of a few albums I'll continue to play through from start to finish. All of songs are great and I am so glad I've found PVRIS!

What music is keeping you pumped?!

Style: LuLu*s!

This year for Christmas I received a gift card from my brother from LuLu’s (thanks!). There are a lot of options that they offer and it can be difficult to choose with so many fashionable options. I have bought a pair of shoes from them in the past (see the link HERE).  It was a great experience before and this time it was again with one minor hiccup. So for any of you that receive a gift card from LuLu’s I recommend shopping on the desktop version of the website.

I placed my order on my phone, but it would not apply the gift card to my order. I had to call them and the customer service rep was nice about it. She explained to me that in order to apply the gift card, I would have had to enter in the amount of the gift card in the designated spot and then from my card the remainder of what I’d owe would be deducted. Well on the mobile site, that option is not available so it would charge you the full amount without applying your gift card. So again, if you have one to use, it is best to use the desktop site until they make it possible. Even the rep said she didn’t know why they didn’t have it setup to order with a GC on the mobile site. Apparently I am not the only one that has had this issue, but no biggie. It was resolved without any issue.

When my package arrived I was pleasantly surprised to find a free pen on top of my order. You can never have too many pens! Everything came wrapped up in plastic and the purse even has its own non-woven bag to protect it.

Now onto to the clothes!

(From L to R)  || Symphony Grey Swing Dress | Quick on the Drawstring Black Tote | Peyote Gardens Black Cactus – Obey (no longer available) ||

So it took me a while and when I finally made a decision I ended up with three items. I knew right off that I want to buy a purse. I’d always been a fan of their bags. I was specifically looking for another black purse, but something a little different and not too big, (I already have a big bag). I love this bag! My mom used to have one of these when I was growing up and sadly it didn’t make it to be passed onto me. (She wore it out so much she had it repaired and wore it out again!) So when I saw it, it was the first thing to go in my cart.

Next was the swing dress. I really like the way this looked on the model. This dress is going to be perfect for layering with leggings. When I tried it on it fit great! I got this in a M and I don’t think a L would have looked right. This has some leeway, but just enough so I wouldn’t be drowning in it. I love the button detail on the sleeve. Most of my button-up shirts have this feature, which keeps sleeves out of the way. This shirt screams to be worn with a scarf and I will do so.

Finally the cactus shirt by Obey was a bit of a wild card for me. I love patterned shirts like this and for some reason this shirt kept saying buy me! Buy me! It didn’t take long for me to agree. The shirt is a button-up and very flattering. It’s a tunic length on me so again this allows me to wear leggings – happy dance – the only think is that I’ll have to (wear a little crop or bandeau top underneath since under my arms it drops a little lower. It’s not something that I would alter because the shirt already fits great, but it’s just a minor detail.

All in all this was a great buying experience. I look forward to wearing these now and in the spring. Slowly but surely I’m getting into spring shopping but who can buy spring when it’s 30 degrees and icy? When it’s gets a little warmer, I’ll be more inclined to shop.

Denim Zig Zag

Happy New Year to all! So I've been crazy and I am still recovering from the holiday season. It was very busy this past year and I am looking forward to all 2015 has to offer me. Here is an outfit I love because it is a blend of fabrics, patterns and colors. They all work together to create this warm and cohesive look that is comfy and stylish!
